Our History
Behind ANAGAVEC there is a lot more than an organization.
Today, the National Association of the Productive Chains of the Penco and Cabuya of Ecuador (ANAGAVEC) has more than 145 members, men and women of different generations, college students, technicians and teachers, mostly from independent producers, indigenous and mestizo, of the rural andean, working on strengthening the value chain of the Agave andean mountains of ecuador, through the implementation of a model of sustainable production based on the principles of participatory governance, environmental integrity, resilience in the economic and social well-being. But every story has its own starting point.
It is thus, in the period between the year 2011 to 2015, the association began to take shape thanks to the momentum of the academy, when the universities have assumed a leading role in the promotion of the Tzawar (Agave andino). This period laid the foundations for the birth of formal ANAGAVEC in the year 2016, where he assumed the commitment of leading the process of obtaining the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for the MISKE, an ancient drink derived from the Tzawar. The hard work of ANAGAVEC bore fruit in October of 2022 with the Resolution of the Declaration of the PDO, MISKE, consolidating its position in march 2023 with the delivery of the official Certificate.
Your perseverance and commitment has helped to consolidate the “Model of conservation and sustainable production of the Agave andino”, basing its work on the principles of participatory governance, environmental integrity, resiliency, economic, and social well-being. It is worth noting, that the association has put special emphasis on the preservation of the ancestral knowledge and the sustainable local development, thus contributing significantly to the conservation of traditions, the promotion of sustainable production and the development of an economic model that is more just and solidarity in the andean communities of Ecuador.
